Lots of things in Delaware are in the "middle of nowhere", that's for sure. With so many small towns and everything being so spread out and rural in this state, it's easy to wander off of the beaten path and discover something amazing. One thing I've found, though, is that most of Delaware's best restaurants are in the middle of their towns. That makes sense - restaurants need traffic, and setting up where the most people are is a smart strategy. However, one Delaware restaurant has been serving up great seafood from, well...the middle of a cornfield, miles from any town.
To get to one of the best seafood restaurants in Delaware, you need to go here.
Yep, you need to go to this giant, empty, barren field. Miles from the coast and the small fishing towns on the Delaware Bay, you'll find an amazing crab shack and seafood restaurant sitting in the middle of a cornfield.
Boondocks Restaurant is located outside of Smyrna on Lighthouse Road.
It's one of the best crab houses in Delaware, and totally worth the trek out to, well, the boondocks of the state.
The atmosphere is friendly and it really gives off a community vibe.
This isn't the type of restaurant where you'll be sitting alone at your table, talking quietly amongst yourselves. More likely, you'll make friends who the tables next to you, the staff, and probably even meet the owner, Pat.
Boondocks is one of the best places to get crabs in Delaware.
You can order them by the dozen and share them amongst your table. The menu also includes fried fish, steamed clams, scallops and even some non-seafood entrees like hamburgers, steaks and chicken wings. Everything is delicious, so you can't go wrong with whatever you end up ordering.
One thing you absolutely must try, though, is the Swamp Water.
If you're making the trip out to Boondocks and you enjoy the occasional drink, get someone to agree to be your DD so you can really enjoy the legendary drink that the restaurant offers.
It almost glows - is it radioactive?
No, it's not radioactive, at least as far as I can tell. It is strong, though, with brandy and vodka and all sorts of flavors, sort of like a fish bowl. The mason jar is a nice touch to remind you that you're a little far off of the beaten path.
Next time you're looking for a great place to eat, go a little off the beaten path to find Boondocks.
They may have a simple, one page menu, and they may be in the middle of a field in rural Delaware, but all of this just adds to the charm of one of the best restaurants in Delaware.
Have you been to Boondocks? What did you think of it?
