Visiting a winery or brewery in Connecticut is always a good time. Both the wine and beer industries in the Nutmeg State are growing rapidly, and we now have makers of craft beer and delicious wine all over the state. When you want to visit several all in one day, it doesn't get much better than a trip to the town of Branford. This shoreline town has a population of under 30,000, but boasts two breweries and a winery, so there's a lot to check out!
1. Thimble Island Brewing Company: 16 Business Park Dr, Branford, CT 06405
Thimble Island Brewing Company is the best-known of the breweries in Branford, CT. It was established in 2010 and is named for the chain of small islands that lie just off Branford's shore.
There's both an indoor taproom and an outdoor patio area. The brewery is family-friendly, but kids must be accompanied by an adult all times and, of course, will have to enjoy the non-alcoholic fare.
There's a full-service kitchen with all kinds of delicious meals, plus bar food, beer, seltzer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks. You can learn more from the Thimble Island Brewing Company website.
2. Caius Farm Brewery: 101 N Branford Rd, Branford, CT 06405
Caius Farm Brewery is a much newer brewery, having just opened up in early 2023. The brewery's founder is far from inexperienced, however. He studied fermentation in Europe and also worked at a brewery in California before forming his own brewery.
The brewery's building draws inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman meeting halls as well as German beer gardens.
The farm has a small hopyard that is used in production of some of the brewery's beers, and there are also beehives that produce the honey used to create the beer. Connecticut-grown ingredients are used whenever possible. You can learn more from the Caius Farm Brewery website.
3. Rose Vineyards and Winery: 2 Valley Rd, North Branford, CT 06471
Not a beer fan? Don't worry, Rose Hill Vineyards and Winery is in North Branford, CT and is a beautiful little winery focused on sustainable agritourism.
Brunches and other events are regularly scheduled in the winery's lovely little event space.
In addition to wines, there's also an amazing food menu featuring locally-sourced goodies. Check out the Rose Vineyards Facebook page for a calendar of upcoming events and more information.
