There's nothing as tasty as a pizza pie, and it's even better when it comes from a pizzeria with a rich family history. Here's a mom-and-pop place in New Haven, and if you've never visited, you're going to want to add it to your dining bucket list.
Sally's Apizza opened in 1938, and it's celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. The restaurant is located at 237 Wooster St., New Haven, CT 06511.
The restaurant was originally owned by Filomena Pepe Consiglio. Her son, Sal Consiglio, pictured here, ran the restaurant until he passed away in 1989. Sal's sons, Richard and Robert owned and operated the pizzeria until just recently. Though they no longer own it, the restaurant will still be managed by the family.
The inside of this pizzeria hasn't changed much since the 1960s or so, but its brown vinyl booths and memorabilia on the walls give it a cozy feeling, and the service is so friendly that you can't help but feel right at home here.
These thin-crust pies are misshapen little gems of goodness. The sauce is savory, and the edges are just ever so slightly burnt by the coal-fired oven where they're baked to perfection.
Sally's uses only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients, and an old family recipe to create the best pizza in Connecticut (and quite possibly, the best in the whole world!).
These pies are huge...
...but you'd better dig right in...they disappear fast!
Two favorites on the menu that you'll want to try are the fresh tomato pizza with white sauce and basil...
...and the white potato pie, which includes potato, onion, mozzarella, parmesan, and rosemary.
Sally's fills up, especially on weekend nights, so you'll want to be prepared to wait in line just to get a table. The wait is well worth it.
Visit Sally's Apizza Wednesday through Sunday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.. The pizzeria is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
What do you think? Does Sally's Apizza have the best pizza in the world?
