Denver's Retrograde cocktail bar doesn't look like a cocktail bar from the outside. That's because it's an ice cream shop. Frozen Matter is a great ice cream shop, too, and you should get some ice cream there sometime.
However, if you feel more like cocktails than ice cream... you should go to Retrograde. How do you get there? Well, all you have to do is walk past the ice cream shop and go to the freezer door you see here. Turn on the light switch... wait... and a bartender will meet you to check your ID and let you inside!
This cocktail bar is small but special. It's pretty neat that it's hidden like it is, but that's not where the fun ends. The creative cocktails served here are spectacular!
If you do visit Retrograde, there's a one drink minimum for all guests - that way people don't take up seats that paying customers could be using. Don't drink alcohol? The bartenders will make you a creative non-alcoholic beverage instead.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. This space is a nod to local history. In 1859, prospectors came to find gold and many settled in Old Colorado City. The building in which the game store and the speakeasy are located is across from the original Territory Colorado Capital.
When you enter, you'll find a comfortable space that has plenty of room for relaxing, imbibing, eating, and playing games.
The drinks offered here are both beautiful and tasty. You might try The Fifty-Niner's Our signature house drink comprised of bourbon, splash of Topo Chico, freshly squeezed lemon, honey, and garnished with a sprig of mint dusted with edible gold flake.
The menu also includes pizzas, cookies, and cheesecake.
Perhaps the best feature of The Fifty-Niner, though, is the game library. The Dice Guys offer a 200 game library here and you can choose one or several to play while you're on your date.
