The Cleveland area offers enchanting visual experiences, the likes of which are typically found only in paintings. With countless stand-out architectural features, streets filled with buzzing cultural celebrations, and a sparkling Great Lake to the north, there is always something to look at. Who needs dinner theatre when you have stunning rooftop dining experiences right in your home city?
Editor's Note: Sadly, Bistro 185 and The Greenhouse Tavern have both closed their doors since this piece was published. You might consider replacing these stops on your bucket list with a few local restaurants with patios instead.
1. Azure Rooftop Lounge at The 9, 2017 East 9th Street, Cleveland
There is always something going on at East Ninth Street, but there are only so many things that one can attend above it. Azure Rooftop Lounge brings an entirely new perspective to East Ninth, offering panoramic views of Downtown Cleveland alongside handcrafted cocktails and cuisine. There is a dress code, though, so remember not to wear flip flops, sneakers, athletic wear, or any other informal clothing when you plan your visit.
2. The Greenhouse Tavern, 2038 East 4th Street, Cleveland
Choose to eat rooftop or at street-level patios—either seating arrangement offers unrivaled views of East Fourth Street, which is truly a stunning location. With strands of lights looping over the street and dozens of vivid flower arrangements, this site is full of classic Cleveland charm. Of course, it also features a stellar menu that will wow your taste buds (I have my eyes set on those Marinated Ohio Cheeses)!
3. Punch Bowl Social, 1086 West 11th Street, Cleveland
Located with The Flats, this unusual location is much more than a restaurant. Of course, they offer food and craft drinks, but they also offer bowling, karaoke, an arcade, tabletop games, and so much more. To top it all off (literally), Punch Bowl Social features a newly opened rooftop patio that you absolutely must see.
4. Alley Cat Oyster Bar, 1056 Old River Road, Cleveland
This waterfront restaurant will have you craving the flavors of the sea. Located in The Flats, it captures the beauty of Industrial Cleveland and combines it with American-style seafood. See the lights of this vibrant city reflect across the shimmering waters of Lake Erie as you enjoy cocktails and delicious seafood.
5. Red, The Steakhouse, 417 Prospect Avenue East, Cleveland
Enjoy traditional chophouse fare including seafood and pasta at this chic steakhouse. Characterized by rich woods and crisp colors, the interior of this restaurant will delight your senses. However, for a true treat, head to the rooftop lounge for a fine selection of cocktails and a breathtaking view of The Q.
6. Nano Brew, 1859 West 25th Street, Cleveland
This beer garden will blow you away. With a mouthwatering selection of classic locally grown bar food in a cozy Ohio City neighborhood, there’s a whole lot to love in this homey little brewpub. Plus, inside is a free bike tune-up station with all the tools you’ll need to get you back on the road.
7. Bistro 185, 991 East 185th Street, Cleveland
This cozy bistro specializes in multi-cultural comfort foods, and it’s unique menu is housed in an eclectic building that is undeniably charming. This rooftop experience is unlike any other, as they grow much of their own food in a fabulously lush rooftop garden.
8. Pickle Bill’s Lobster House, 101 River Street, Grand River
This menu is best described as eclectic—enjoy deep-fried pickles or delicacies such as calamari and crab cocktail at this waterfront wonderland. Nautical and fun, you’ll love the rooftop bar and grill, and you won't believe that this oceanic experience is located right here in Northeast Ohio.
9. Pier W, 12700 Lake Avenue, Lakewood
What’s not to love in Lakewood? This enchanting small town is full of friendly people, and a stunning view of the Lake Erie Shore is always waiting to greet you. While you’re in town, swing by Pier W for upscale coastal cuisine on the coast of our very own Great Lake. Rooftop seating at this location is perched out over Lake Erie, offering views that will sweep you off your feet.
The sights and sounds of Cleveland are best combined with delicious meals that will delight your senses. By visiting any of these local restaurants, you will find just that, and more. What is your favorite rooftop destination in Cleveland?
