For every five-star high-class restaurant in downtown Cleveland, there is an amazing little eatery hidden somewhere else in the city. Tracking down a great hole-in-the-wall restaurant is an adventure in itself, and these eight places are among the very best in town.
1. Doc And Lennie's (8933 Cedar Ave)
The south might be the home of barbecue, but Cleveland is no slouch when it comes to succulent, saucy classics. Though not quite a tarpaper shack, Al And Lennie's is a fairly out-of-the-way barbecue joint that will be worth the trek.
Note: Doc & Lennie's is temporarily closed, but we hope to see it open again soon!
2. Pupuseria La Bendicion (3685 W 105th St)
This must-visit Colombian and Salvadoran restaurant offers food and experiences you can't find at any other eatery in Cleveland. Though the locale isn't exactly eye-catching, once you're inside you'll be in for some of the best South American fare around.
3. Slyman's (3106 Saint Clair Ave NE)
Slyman's needs no introduction for most Clevelanders. A historic sandwich shop housed in an unassuming brick building, every visit to Slyman's - and every huge stack of corned beef - is a mouthwatering taste of the Cleveland lifestyle.
4. Big Al's Diner (12600 Larchmere Blvd)
A proper diner is a hard thing to come by. The unique blend of homey atmosphere and wonderful greasy diner food is a one-of-a-kind combo, and Big Al's might just be the best place to experience that in Cleveland.
5. Nate's Deli (1923 W 25th St)
Part sandwich shop and part must-visit ethnic eatery, Nate's in Ohio City has something for everybody. From delicious reubens to savory shawarma, you owe it to yourself to track down this incredible deli.
6. Superior Pho (3030 Superior Ave E)
This blink-and-you'll-miss-it noodle shop offers truly spectacular Asian bowls. While finding this spot, tucked away next to a large warehouse, might prove challenging, you'll definitely be back for more.
7. George's Kitchen (13101 Triskett Rd)
George's is a timeless family diner that serves up classic American breakfast, lunch and dinner with a Greek-inspired twist. From pork chops served with Greek lemon sauce to a no-frills stack of fluffy pancakes, there's no shortage of options to satisfy any appetite at George's Kitchen.
8. Indian Flame Restaurant (11623 Euclid Ave)
In addition to a top-notch menu of spicy Indian food, Indian Flame manages to be one of Cleveland's most charming little eateries. From its colorful walls to the flowery decorations adorning every window, Indian Flame stands out from its hole-in-the-wall status with style.
