There’s nothing like a cold beer in the hot sun—except, it never really gets too balmy in San Francisco. Still, we’re all for throwing on those layers and eating, drinking, and being downright merry al fresco whenever possible. Many restaurants and bars throughout the city accommodate for this urban must-have, and San Francisco’s Mission District is an especially hot spot for outdoor patio lounging—it is one of the sunnier locales in the city, after all. Still, our list of best patios in San Francisco makes its way all around town.
1. El Techo de Lolinda
This Mission Street spot boasts one of the best views in the city. Get the fried plantains, guac, mango, and chorizo, plus a margarita or cerveza and take in San Francisco from this rooftop fave.
2. Chambers Eat + Drink
Sitting amid the Tenderloin’s Phoenix Hotel, an old favorite of rock stars passing through town, this swanky restaurant and bar offers one of the sunniest, most spacious patios in the city (and there’s a pool, too!). You’ll feel like you’ve dropped right into SoCal.
3. Virgil’s Sea Room
Right next to El Rio, another spot with a great outdoor patio, Virgil’s is a cozier (and quieter) bar with a slight dive-y, low-key feel. The patio is spacious and heaters are available for those inevitable chilly summer evenings.
4. Jones
This rooftop lounge, nestled on the edge of Lower Nob Hill and the Tenderloin, places you right above the middle of a bustling block. You’ll be surrounded by buildings yet enjoying your cocktail in an open, outdoor setting—it’s the ultimate urban experience. Best to go during off-times; it gets especially packed for sunny-day happy hours.
5. Zeitgeist
The staff at this longstanding Mission beer garden is infamously cranky, but it’s all worth it for a craft beer and a grilled burger.
6. Biergarten
Grab yourself a pretzel, brat, and liter of beer at this minimalist Bavarian-style beer garden in Hayes Valley.
7. The Ramp
Located at the waterfront of Mission Bay is this long-established restaurant and bar that serves up fresh seafood and burgers. Be sure to enjoy live music on the weekends, for Salsa Saturday and Brazilian Sunday.
8. Arlequin Cafe
There’s a leafy outdoor patio at the back of this popular Hayes Valley cafe. Surrounded by other businesses and apartments, it feels like you’re almost trespassing in someone’s backyard…
9. Foreign Cinema
Catch a classic film and indulge in oysters, organic pop tarts, and other delicacies on the outdoor patio at this much-revered restaurant in the Mission.
10. Thee Parkside
One of the last-remaining punk-rock spots in the city, this Potrero Hill bar and music venue offers a spacious back patio perfect to lounge in with a beer, some tater tots, and live music.
11. 4505 Burgers & BBQ
Grab a picnic table, bite into some brisket and deep-fried mac and cheese, and watch the world whiz by on the busy Divisadero Street at this popular NoPa BBQ joint.
12. Arguello Restaurant
The restaurant is Mexican-inspired, but your real goal here is to enjoy the beautiful back patio surrounded by the verdant trees of the Presidio.
13. Dirty Habit
Self-described as "an edgy, sultry bar-centric restaurant and hideaway," this spot in the tourist heart of Union Square keeps things classy with its elegant heated patio on the fifth floor of the Hotel Zelos.
Now we know there are many more options to choose from. Where are your favorite outdoor patios in San Francisco?
