If I've discovered anything about Southern California, it's that travel doesn't have to mean getting on a plane or even leaving our home area - at least the feeling of travel anyway. There are many local restaurants, destinations, and experiences that will take your mind and senses to a far off place, and Mirate in Los Angeles is one of them.
The entrance to Mirate is easy to miss and only hints at what awaits inside. Head up the stairs to leave Los Angeles and be transported instantly to the world of Tulum, Mexico.
The centerpiece of the restaurant is an open-air dining courtyard with a beautiful tree in the center. The second floor has patio-style dining areas surrounding the atrium.
Inside, you'll find a large and lively bar with skilled bartenders serving up traditional and innovative beverages.
While much of the restaurant's dining area is open to the center or surrounded by glass windows, there are also cozy, intimate corners and spaces tucked inside.
Mirate prides itself on a somewhat whimsical approach to traditional Mexican food. The Asada con Papas gets a lot of attention and rave reviews, but you'll also enjoy discovering slightly less typical offerings - familiar flavors presented in unexpected ways - like lamb flautas or the short rib and marrow birria. There are also vegan options and customers seem to really enjoy the vegan ceviche.
If you can leave room for dessert to finish things off, try the churros or the popular flan brulee.
The cocktail menu is as creative and unexpected as the food. One of the most recommended drinks is the La Sonadora, made with passionfruit, almond, gin, green tea, goat milk, and absinthe.
If you're up for a little traditional beverage adventure, try a mezcal tasting. Mirate has a huge collection of mezcal and knowledgeable staff that will enhance the experience with a bit of history and education. This traditional tasting is served with cooked agave, gooseberries, and fried crickets.
The lush foliage, twinkle lights, pretty lanterns, and plush pillows throughout give the entire space a warm, relaxed, and romantic ambiance day or night.
