It can be difficult to find good Eastern European food on the West Coast. We have good Greek food in California, but Russian and Polish restaurants are few. We searched high and low for a good restaurant that serves handmade pierogies, and we found a great one.
Cafe Europa in San Francisco serves "European comfort food." Located south of the Presidio in the Lake Street neighborhood, this small restaurant also makes its own sausages.
But first, have you ever tried a pierogi? People who've had pierogies will search far and wide to find handmade ones. They're that good!
Pierogies are dumplings stuffed with potatoes, cheese and/or sauerkraut. Typically, the dumplings are boiled and then pan fried before serving.
Pierogies can be a snack, an appetizer, or a meal if it comes with sides.
Frequent Cafe Europa guests rave about practically every item on the menu, especially pierogies.
Some of the other top favorites include: goulash, beef stroganoff, borscht, and potato pancakes.
They also have beer imported from Eastern Europe.
Not a beer fan? Chose a glass or bottle from their extensive wine list.
You can dine in or get take out. But they do not offer delivery.
So make a special trip to Cafe Europa for a hearty meal. Enjoy some pierogies and schnitzel on a chilly San Francisco day.
Cafe Europa is open everyday for lunch and dinner. Parking can be a challenge, so if you have a reservation arrive early to find a spot or park in a garage.
Have you been to Cafe Europa? If not, where do you get pierogies in Northern California? Tell us in the comments.
