What is it about a diner that instantly makes you feel at home? Perhaps it's the familiar surroundings, the warm comfort food, or just the good old fashioned feel of a place that makes you feel like family. No matter what the reason, there's no question that these nine diners in Southern California make us feel like a local from the moment we walk through the door. Whether you're craving a classic breakfast of eggs and bacon or something hearty for dinner like fried chicken and mashed potatoes, these diners serve up a mean meal in comforting surroundings that will make you want to return again and again.
1. The Red Kettle -- Idyllwild
One of my favorite things about visiting Idyllwild is heading into Red Kettle for a hearty breakfast. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu at this classic diner in the heart of downtown Idyllwild. Order an omelette and hash browns and your tummy will be happy for the entire day. Open daily for breakfast and lunch from 7am-2pm.
2. Ocean Diner -- Hermosa Beach
Not only is this diner too cute for words on the inside and out, but the food served in this cozy gem is quite delicious. If you love something sweet for breakfast make sure you try the strawberry cheesecake waffle. You will be full for days after devouring this decadent feast.
3. Nickel Diner -- Los Angeles
The Nickel Diner in Los Angeles is an upscale take on the classic diner experience in downtown Los Angeles. A few of the specialties I can't help but daydream about include fried chicken, pancakes with a heaping serving of fresh blueberries on top, and maple glazed donuts with salty bacon. What delicious heaven!
4. Jenny's Diner -- Highland
A local favorite in Inland Empire, Jenny's Diner has that classic diner look and feel with all of the comfort foods you'd expect to find on the menu. Corned beef hash and chicken fried steak are just two of the favorites you must try at this homestyle diner.
5. Woody's Diner -- Huntington Beach and other SoCal locations
With six different locations throughout Southern California, there's most likely a Woody's Diner near you. With a classic 1950s SoCal surfer theme, this charming diner feels like a blast from the past. The original location opened in Huntington Beach in 1987, and twenty years later this local gem is still thriving. Feast on breakfast all day or check out their dinner menu which features some tasty burgers stacked high with your favorite toppings.
6. Harry's Coffee Shop -- La Jolla
Harry's Coffee Shop is like a familiar friend in the neighborhood. Since 1960, this family-owned diner has been serving comfort food in the La Jolla neighborhood with heaping portions and reasonable prices. You'll always encounter a friendly face at this local diner whether you're a regular customer or just visiting for the first time.
7. Perry's Café -- San Diego
Located in Old Town San Diego, this bustling restaurant is always packed with people and there's a good reason for it. You'll find a creative menu filled with unique breakfast eats and an incredible selection of frittatas. There's nothing fancy about Perry's once you step inside, but the food will sure knock your socks off. Pictured here: Combo Frittata with fresh avocado on top.
8. Dale's Diner -- Long Beach
If you love a classic handmade milkshake, then Dale's Diner in Long Beach should definitely be on your bucket list. This retro diner will take you back in time with yummy comfort foods and fountain drinks right out of the '50s.
9. Pann's Restaurant -- Los Angeles
Nothing screams diner quite like a breakfast of pork chops, eggs, and hash browns. Mmmm! LA just wouldn't be the same without Pann's restaurant to make you feel right at home. Serving breakfast and lunch to hungry crowds since 1958, there's no question that Pann's has stood the test of time.
There's nothing like good old fashioned comfort food to make you feel right at home. Is your tummy starting to growl after looking at all of these pictures of pancakes, waffles, and donuts?
