In a city that boasts of amazing Tex Mex, one restaurant stands above the rest. Its legacy is cemented in fresh ingredients and a familial atmosphere. If the smoking fajitas don't reel you in, then the homemade tortillas will. In fact, one U.S president even special ordered their famous chile rellenos to the White House (delivered by jet, of course). There's no denying that Matt's El Rancho is the "King of Mexican Food."
Matt's El Rancho sprouted from humble beginnings.
In its early days, Matt's El Rancho served southern favorites in a small dining room with only 10 tables. Customers could order a combination plate and a beer for a little over a dollar.
Of course, this iconic Mexican food restaurant has grown quite a bit since 1953.
Due to its increasing popularity, owners Matt and Janie Martinez could barely keep up with demand. In 1983, after four expansions, The Martinez family moved the restaurant to its current address on South Lamar. Today, this massive institution can seat over 500 people.
The Martinez family knows the importance of fresh ingredients.
While other restaurants try to get away with using store-bought tortillas, the Martinez family would shudder at the thought. The minute you walk through the doors, you can see the expert chefs making these tortillas by hand.
It's no wonder so many people have taken to this local restaurant.
When Matt's El Rancho was in its early stages, the delicious food caught the eye of University of Texas Sports publicist Jones Ramsey. Awed by the decadent, spicy flavors, Ramsey introduced this down-home restaurant to local sports writers. Soon enough, Matt's El Rancho started catering the press box at UT football games.
Sometimes, the craving for Matt's magnificent Mexican food calls from miles away.
Lyndon B. Johnson's love for the famous chile rellenos knew no bounds. He cherished this meal so much that he often had them sent over to The White House by private jet.
Once you've tasted these amazing dishes, you'll know what the fuss is all about.
Their cheesy, spicy enchiladas will make you swoon.
Everyone is family at Matt's El Rancho
To this day, Matt's remains a family-owned establishment. Many loyal customers have frequented this restaurant since childhood and know the staff by name. It's not uncommon to be greeted with a hug at the door.
There's a good reason why this place is always packed.
Don't panic about the wait time, though. This huge restaurant has several dining rooms and can seat over 500, so you won't be hungry for long.
Taste the goodness at Matt's Famous El Rancho.
