Arizona has its fair share of historic restaurants. One of them is the Stockyards Steakhouse, nestled in the heart of our capital city. Dating to the 1940s, this timeless eatery is like a portal back to the Wild West. It's among the oldest restaurants in Arizona, and the steak is some of the best you'll ever have. Hungry yet? Pull up a chair and dig in!
Our story begins in 1919, when Edward A. Tovrea opened the Tovrea Stockyards.
The feed lot accommodated more than 300,000 cattle each year!
In 1947, The Stockyards Restaurant opened its doors.
Known as "Arizona's Original Steakhouse," the eatery served as a gathering place for noteworthy figures, such as bankers, politicians, and - of course - cattle barons.
Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the restaurant in 1953.
It reopened the very next year, then in 2004, it underwent a massive renovation after being added to the City of Phoenix Historic Register.
The steakhouse may have gotten a facelift, but it's still the same old Stockyards Arizonans have known and loved for decades.
Its historic charm remains intact, and you'll be transported back to the Wild West upon entrance.
When it comes to the food, you'll be hard-pressed to find higher quality steak.
From bone-in ribeye to New York strip to filet mignon, there's a cut for meat lovers of all persuasions.
Other entrées include the restaurant's signature prime rib, and myriad other beef, pork, chicken, and seafood dishes.
The sides are equally worth mentioning, with such offerings as twice-baked potatoes, buttermilk onion rings, and creamed spinach.
If you're stopping by for lunch, the menu is just as extensive.
Options include fully-loaded sandwiches - like this shaved prime rib and cheddar on rye - plus steak, seafood, salad, and daily specials.
For the most authentic experience, belly up to the bar for a glass of whisky or other fine libation.
The architecture is reminiscent of a saloon from the cowboy era - minus the sarsaparilla being slid down the countertop!
