Sometimes, you just need to indulge in a giant ice cream sundae without considering the consequences. That's exactly what MacAlpine's Diner & Soda Fountain in Phoenix is all about, with a 22-scoop monstrosity that challenges even the most voracious of appetites.
Please note, MacAlpine's is temporarily closed.
With a building dating to 1929, MacAlpine's has weathered some significant historical events, including WWII and the Great Depression. It's one of very few remaining original soda fountains in the country, and the authenticity is undeniable.
Serving as both a diner and vintage store, the interior truly looks like it's from a different era. Red leather booths, checkered floors, and a jukebox bring the '50s back to life.
Hand-spun shakes are made with ice cream and your choice of 99 syrup flavors. There's truly something for everyone, whether you like amaretto, wedding cake, plain 'ol chocolate, or something else entirely. Pair it with a burger or blue plate special for a truly quintessential diner meal.
If a heaping bowl of ice cream is more your speed, check out the list of flavors. Build your own sundae, or choose one of over a dozen from the menu. And for those with appetites that simply can't be tamed, there is another option...
Dubbed "The Legend," this behemoth weighs in at a whopping ten pounds and contains 22 scoops of assorted ice cream flavors. Whipped cream, cherries, and six toppings adorn the ginormous mound, which comes with a price tag of $119.99.
Easier on your stomach (and wallet), "The Masterpiece" and "The Legend" weigh four and seven pounds and cost $59.99 and $95.99, respectively. They're still absolute monstrosities, but less likely to leave you with a belly ache.
Other beverages include malts, freezes, ice cream soda, floats, egg creams, and phosphates. Customize it with any syrup flavor, and add peanut butter, marshmallow creme, chocolate fudge, or a fresh banana for a next-level taste sensation.
If you prefer to eat dessert rather than drink it, several flavors of Amish pie are made fresh daily. Keep it light and fruity, or indulge in a slice of award-winning pecan with salted caramel topping. Don't forget a scoop of custard on the side!
