Add that in with local handcrafted brews and rockin' live music and you have a last frontier festival that is sure to satisfy. Check out these ten festivals and culinary events in Alaska that food lovers should definitely not miss out on.
1. Alyeska Resort Blueberry Festival
This family-friendly event is celebrated in the great outdoors in the groovy town of Girdwood at Alyeska Resort. Those that attend can enjoy awesome live music, blueberry picking up the mountain, creation contests, blueberry treats, cooking creations and a beer/wine garden.
2. Kodiak Crab Festival
The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce does a fantastic job of putting this festival together annually to help benefit the local residents of Kodiak. Generally held around Memorial Day weekend for four total days, visitors can enjoy delicious buttery crab, fun contests, family games and lots of other great recreational outlets.
3. Taste of the Kenai
On The Kenai, Alaska's Playground, this is the cream-of-the-crop when it comes to culinary events. Always a sold-out event that is growing in size with each year that passes, the Taste of the Kenai is a tasting event that features local food and beverage vendors from Seward, to Kenai, to Soldotna and Homer (and everywhere in between). Attendees can help themselves to as much food, wine, beer and desserts as they'd like and can vote on their top picks after they are done sampling the night away. Other fun events include a raffle and silent auction.
4. Anchorage Beer & Bacon Festival
BEER AND BACON. Like, together. And celebrated on a "festival level" scale. Drool. Gasp. Brilliance. The name says it all, amirite? Located at The Lakefront Anchorage hotel, guests can enjoy lots of beer, bacon, eating contests, bacon food judging contest, live music and lots of fun all night long!
5. Fairbanks Midnight Sun Festival
This is Fairbanks like you've never experienced it before! Said to be Alaska's largest single day event, the Midnight Sun Festival attracts well over 30,000 people to enjoy live music, face painting, gold panning, sled dog puppies and a delicious BBQ cook-off.
6. Palmer Colony Days
This weekend-long event is free to the public and offers an abundance of family fun activities, arts and crafts, parade floats, yummy food vendors and so much more!
7. Sitka Seafood Festival
The mission of this festival is to celebrate the most popular food source in Alaska - seafood! Wild, natural, sustainable Alaska seafood at it's best. Enjoy a festive parade, food vendors, cook-offs and the time of your life!
8. Unalaska Blueberry Bash
This is more than just an event, it is a tradition. A labor-intensive tradition at that, started in the 1980's. Discover some phenomenal berry picking spots or just stop by and enjoy a piece of pie, tart, cobbler, homemade jams and more!
9. Taste of Homer
This culinary tasting and showcasing event in Homer features food from all around town highlighting the local flavor. With a theme that focuses on 'from farm to table' you are sure to be satisfied with the amount of Alaska grown food (and wine) at this fun event!
10. Anchorage Downtown Dining Week
Okay, so this is not exactly a "festival" in every sense of the word, but it is a brilliant idea that locals and visitors alike are falling more in love with every day. For 10 straight days, 26 restaurants throughout downtown Anchorage offer lunch and dinner specials at a very affordable price-tag. This is an excellent no-fuss way to really submerge yourself into the Anchorage downtown culinary scene without any hesitation. All of these partnering restaurants offer scrumptious food that is sure to satisfy.
