If you’re looking for the best small food town in Alaska, Talkeetna should be at the very top of your list. With an astounding array of delicious restaurants, this town blows it out of the water when it comes to everything baked. From pizzas to fresh bread, cookies, and more, Talkeetna is a foodie's paradise of delicious baked goods on every corner.
1. Talkeetna Roadhouse
Talkeetna Roadhouse is an iconic mainstay of Talkeetna, and for good reason. Built in 1917, this building has weathered the years, (and the snow), to become one of the best places to stop in the town for something tasty. Whether you’re spending the night in their historic lodging, grabbing breakfast at one of their family-shared tables, or ordering a cookie subscription to-go, this lodge whips up world-famous cookies and cinnamon rolls, pies, and daily breads.
2. Mountain High Pizza Pie
True to its namesake, you’re going to find some of the best pizza pie in the entire state of Alaska. With crazy delicious flavors like Gyro Pie, classics like Barbecue and Buffalo, and everything in between, you won’t be able to resist a slice (or two) of this fantastic pizza. Made with love, and ingredients from their garden and the state of Alaska whenever possible, this place takes cooking locally to a whole new level. Stop by for a slice, a draft of local beer, and hang out in their garden and listen to live music.
3. Flying Squirrel Bakery
Flying Squirrel Bakery Cafe is a fixture in the small town of Talkeetna, serving up everything from fresh pizzas, hearty breads, sweet pastries, and more. Come on in for a deli sandwich with bread fresh out of the oven, or join their delivery program, where you can get your favorite baked goods all winter long, even all the way in Anchorage! Which is good, because once you taste the dishes that come out of this bakery, you’ll be craving them until you have them again.
4. Talkeetna Spinach Bread
It’s not summer if you can’t get your hands on Talkeetna Spinach Bread. This iconic little spot is a renovated Airstream trailer with a short menu. The menu may not have much, but what it does, it does well. There’s a cult following for their spinach bread that's topped with spinach, roasted garlic, and a blend of cheeses, served on hearty wood-fired spent grain bread. This epic dish also makes an appearance at the Alaska State Fair every year if you can’t make it to Talkeetna.
