Ahh, fall in Florida. Most residents up north will begin to feel the change in temperature around October, with Southern Florida residents perhaps only feeling a bit cooler at night. But that isn’t all there is to the fall season in Florida! What many residents don’t know is that despite being one of the southernmost states, the fall season in Florida can still bring about a changing of the leaves, as long as you know the right places to look. While the rest of the country is predicted to be blanketed in color from late September to early October, Florida is a bit different. The fall leaf map is simple to use, with a slider on the bottom that will set to whichever week you choose. From there, you can slide to see the predicted progression of fall for your state!
For Florida residents, you’ll likely have to slide the slider a bit farther to the right than most other states. For example, this photo below is from October 4, 2021, and as you can see, nothing much is happening in Florida yet.
But don’t get discouraged, because just a week or two later, northern Florida will start seeing some minimal changes.
As of October 18th, Florida residents will likely see patchy fall foliage through the north and the panhandle, while central Florida will see minimal changes.
Similar to any meteorological forecast, leaf predictions will never be 100% accurate. Who can really predict Mother Nature, right?! However, after publishing the predictive fall foliage map for nearly a decade, the data sources, process, and algorithm are as close as it gets to accuracy.
Floridians should wait until around the first week in November to really start seeing change throughout the entirety of the state.
During this week the panhandle and northern parts of Florida near the Georgia state line will start seeing near-peak foliage.
Then, while the rest of the country is past its peak it becomes Florida’s time to shine. Around November 8, 2021, Floridians can expect most of the state to be in near-peak to peak fall foliage.
This week might be the perfect time for leaf-peepers to enter Florida in order to enjoy all the magic.
Anyone in the central or southern parts of the state should hold out hope for November 15th. This is when the fall foliage for 2021 will take its final bow throughout the country.
So if you’re planning an outdoor wedding, scheduling a photo shoot, or even planning a trip to a state park nearby, this would be the time.
While Florida isn’t in the running for the leaf-peeping crown for the whole country, there are still a few wonderful places to see fall color within the state.
For instance, Torreya State Park boasts beautiful colors every year, meanwhile, the cypress trees in Wakulla Springs State Park will showcase a magical foliage shift.
Enjoy the beauty of fall this year in Florida as you plan your trip throughout the state accordingly.
Thanks to this foliage prediction map, we’re able to keep an eye out when Mother Nature will shine this autumn.
