In Wyoming, it's pretty easy to get away from it all. We're surrounded by wilderness, mountains, and open range. Still, sometimes living in town can get a little stale, and we want to head out to find some peace and quiet. Here are a few areas of Wyoming wilderness where a quiet day of solitude is nearly guaranteed.
1. Kirwin
Kirwin is one of Wyoming's most desolate ghost towns, and it's rumored to be full of paranormal activity. Amelia Earhart once had a home here, though the whole town was abandoned after an avalanche wiped away many buildings and took three lives. Today, you can visit this remote ghost town and step back in time.
2. Medicine Bow National Forest
Medicine Bow National Forest is home to 1,000,000 acres of pristine and rugged wilderness where you can truly get off the grid. Climb Bomber Mountain for a unique hike that will take you to the site of a plane wreck that still glistens in the sun.
3. Independence Rock
Independence Rock was one of the most important landmarks along the Oregon Trail. If travelers made it here by the 4th of July, chances were high that they would make it through the Sawtooth Mountains before snow made the trek even more dangerous than it already was. Today, visitors climb the rock that was known as the register of the west, and observe the famous names carved into the stone.
4. Shoshone National Forest
Shoshone National Forest is made of 2,500,000 acres of wilderness in the Rocky Mountains. It was the first nationally protected forest in the United States, and it's still one of the most wild areas of the country. Spend a weekend backpacking through this Wyoming wilderness that looks just like it did when Lewis and Clark made their way through.
5. Devils Tower
Devils Tower was the country's first National Monument, and today it's a great place to see unique geology up close. The walking paths make for great day hikes, and this is one of the most remote areas of the state.
6. Bighorn National Forest
Bighorn National Forest is home to the Cloud Peak Wilderness, which is one of America's most gorgeous wilderness areas. Hike to Mistymoon Lake, spend some time in the mountains, and then return to nearby Buffalo for a true wild west town experience.
7. Grand Teton Climbers Ranch
Enjoy Grand Teton National Park in the most unique way - by staying at the Grand Teton Climber's Ranch. This American Alpine Club outpost is open to the public, and the rustic bunkhouses make for the perfect base camp for your canyon and crest trail hiking adventures.
8. Fossil Butte
Explore a unique feature near Kemmerer at Fossil Butte National Monument. Here, you can come face-to-face with animal and plant fossils that are between 50 million years old. This is one of the best-preserved collections of aquatic fossils in the world, so you'll be stepping back in time while you're stepping away from the crowded cities and highways.
9. Beartooth Highway
Traveling the Beartooth Highway through the Absaroka Range ie one of the wildest adventures you can take in Wyoming. Though the road is Maintained, there are hardly any services available, and the road is subject to wild weather year-round. It's just about the most magical journey you can take on four wheels in the Cowboy State.
