If you're up for visiting a tasting room that's totally different than your typical brewery, distillery, or winery, head to Gillette and visit Big Lost Meadery.
This beautiful, restored building was turned into the first meadery in Wyoming!
You might be wondering what a meadery even is! Mead is a honey-based alcoholic drink that was accidentally discovered by hunters and gatherers more than 20,000 years ago.
People found stagnant honey and water that had fermented, drank it, and were happy to find it had intoxicating properties. Over time, it spread to different cultures and became known as the drink of royalty. Ancient Greeks thought of mead as the drink of the gods. It was popular in Viking cultures, too!
Because wine was much easier to make, though, mead fell out of favor in modern times. Luckily, places like Big Lost Meadery are fueling a resurgence!
Big Lost was founded in 2014 by Sam Clikeman, a brewer who was convinced to try something completely different. Now, this meadery is the talk of the town!
Big Lost has five meads on tap, with new ones in production all the time. Their Wild Man Mead and Crazy Woman Mead are local favorites, and you can sample them when you come in for a visit.
You'll also find half a dozen craft beers on the menu, so you can stop by and try something new each time you visit.
