It sure seems like Wisconsin has more than its fair share of haunted places and ghost stories. Add to that the frankly too many disasters - man-made and natural - to plague the state and it's a wonder any of us really want to spend our time here.

Here's a list of some of the reasons Wisconsin is just really one of the creepiest states around:

1. East Immanuel Lutheran Church - Amery

Folks say you can here the congregation singing even when the church is empty and the bell up in the tower will spontaneously ring.

2. More serial killers than we'd like to acknowledge, honestly.

There's been way too much gruesome history, from Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer to the more recent shooting sprees in the woods, at a Sikh temple and at a spa.

3. New Richmond Tornado

The 1899 New Richmond Tornado was an estimated F5 tornado that nearly destroyed the town of New Richmond, Wisconsin, on June 12, 1899, killing 117 and injuring 125 people. The circus was in town, drawing even more people to the small area in west-central Wisconsin. It's estimated that damage was equal to more than $8 million in today's money.

4. Cedar Grove Fog Crash

In October 2002, the deadliest highway crash in state history happened when cars hit a wall of fog on I-94 near Cedar Grove. More than 50 cars quickly piled up and in the end, ten people died.

5. The Great Fire - Peshtigo

Too often forgotten since it happened the same day as the Chicago Fire, the Peshtigo Fire was the deadliest wildfire in recorded history. Total tallies are unknowable, but estimates are from 1,500 - 2,500 people killed. More than 1.2 million acres of forest were consumed.

6. Elk Lake Dam - Elk Lake

The body of a woman was recovered from the lake and it's said her spirit lingers to haunt the area. Fisherman report her lingering around their boats.

7. The Pfister Hotel - Milwaukee

First opened in 1893, it's arguably the most luxurious hotel in the state's biggest city. Visiting MLB teams often stay there, but many players refuse due to the frequent ghost activity they report. The Pfister has a reputation among professional athletes nationwide.

8. Aztalan - Jefferson County

First settled around the year 900, Aztalan is the site of an ancient settlement whose indigenous people constructed massive earthwork mounds for religious and political purposes. There are three remaining mounds as well as stockades that are believed to be for both ceremonial and defensive purposes.

9. Brumder Mansion - Milwaukee

Now a B&B with a basement theater, the owners of this place say they've come to know their spirit inhabitants quite well. They say their spirit is the old house manager and the guys in the basement are really just an extra security measure.

10. Bodega Brew Pub - La Crosse

Open since the turn of the 20th century, this place seems to embrace it's spookiness. Numerous patrons have reported feeling a tap on the shoulder – only to find no one there when they turn around. Bartenders report a ghostly apparition floating through the bar and customers have noted a mysterious chill in different spots. The basement has seen bricks rearrange themselves and has the echos of high heels when no one else is around.

11. Nelsen's Hall - Washington Island

This place managed to avoid Prohibition by getting a pharmacy license. The owner lived and died in the apartment upstairs and it seems he's still not ready to leave his beloved bar. His footsteps can often be heard and patrons claim the radio station will change without anyone being near it.

12. Ripon College - Ripon

Ranked #2 on a list of haunted colleges in the Midwest, small Ripon College has quite the spirited history. With a cemetery right on campus it's not hard to understand why!
