Here at Only in Wisconsin, we are all about telling you about the weird, wacky places that you should know about. Wisconsin is pretty full of wacky places. Here are 10 of our favorites.
1. FAST: Fiberglass Statue Mold Yard
This unassuming town has a rather strange secret. This is a yard full of many giant fiberglass figures. We're talking about those giant structures you sometimes see in front of stores. They have to make them somewhere, right?
2. Sputnik Crash Site
Yep, something fell from outer space into Wisconsin one day. Sputnik was a spacecraft from the former Soviet Union and, well, things didn't go so well. Everything burned up in outer space, except for this piece that fell into Manitowoc. A little plaque commemorates this event.
3. Dickeyville Grotto
You would never think this town would have something quite like this. This structure was built between 1925 and 1931. Grottos became a trend in the Midwest during this time. This one is bedazzled - loads of costume jewelry adorns it.
4. Upside Down White House
There are two White Houses in America. This one is just located in Wisconsin Dells, and everything inside of it is upside down. You can totally tour this place and learn why it is upside down, but you have to ask yourself who was the originator of this idea in the first place.
5. Jurustic Park
Jurustic Park is a "theme park" full of beings from the Iron Age. In fact, these structures have been created by a welder and artist. And boy are they cool.
6. Moccasin Bar
This bar has a really strange feature: stuffed animal dioramas. We're not talking about teddy bears, either. And, of course, they are oriented in the most interesting ways, such as the two stuffed raccoons in a boxing match.
7. Forevertron
Dr. Evermor is creating something...what that is exactly, we're not so sure. Forevertron is a graveyard of compressors and gauges that are turned into things that we can only describe as steampunk (unintentionally so). You won't know where to look.
8. JFK Largest Ball of Twine
Up in the Northwoods, JFK (no, not the dead president) has created the world's largest ball of twine. What would compel him to make such a thing? He just wanted to. He's been adding to this ball of twine since 1979.
9. National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame
They won't let Pete Rose into the Hall, but you can get into this Hall if you are a standout fisherman. More than being a hall of fame, though, they are all about educating people about freshwater fishing.
10. Peshtigo Fire Museum and Mass Grave
You may not know, but the Peshtigo fire happened on the same day as the Chicago fire (weird) and killed WAY more people. There is a mass grave here of the victims. The museum gives you a good sense of how horrific this event was.
