Of all the impressive bridges in Wisconsin, there’s only one that’s been ranked among the nation’s most beautiful – and it’s Horton Bridge. Completely worthy of recognition, the covered bridge is steeped in history and charm. Plus, it doesn't hurt that it overlooks a waterfall!
According to Travel and Leisure, Wisconsin's very own Horton Bridge is one of The Most Beautiful Covered Bridges in America.
Easily accessible, the 55-foot long bridge is located in Amnicon Falls State Park in South Range.
Moved to its current location in 1930, it originally served as a highway bridge that crossed the Amnicon River.
Known as a Horton Bridge, it’s historically significant for two reasons - its age and unusual construction.
The bridge’s unique design can be accredited to Charles M. Horton (hence the name), who obtained several patents for bridges in 1897 and 1898.
Horton’s innovative design eliminated the need for rivets and bolts, which meant that bridges could be quickly assembled without expensive machinery and tools.
Aside from the bridge at Amnicon Falls State Park, there are only five other known Horton bridges in Wisconsin.
Historical significance isn’t all the bridge has going for it, though.
Overlooking a waterfall, the bridge provides the perfect vantage point for taking in the scenic surroundings.
Lower Falls, the waterfall that can be seen from the bridge, is just one of several waterfalls in Amnicon Falls State Park.
In addition to numerous falls, the 825-acre park boasts winding trails, picturesque scenery, and plenty of other perks.
