If you want to time travel, there’s nothing like a good book to take you back into the past. But if you visit one little library in the Northwoods, you can take a step back in time without reading a page. The Wabeno Public Library might just be the coolest library in Wisconsin – it’s tucked into an authentic Northwoods log cabin and it's the only log library in Wisconsin. Here’s why you need to visit the Wabeno Public Library.
If you’ve never spent time in northern Wisconsin, you might have never heard of Wabeno. It’s an unincorporated community in Forest County. But it’s a unique little place. As the sign at the edge of town proudly proclaims, there’s only one Wabeno!
Wabeno has a long history as a logging town – it was built around three lumber companies.

When you roll into the heart of Wabeno on Highway 32, the speed limit will drop and you’ll encounter a band shell and a small collection of historic buildings.
One of these buildings was constructed in 1897 as a land office for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. It was one of the first buildings in Wabeno.
The Town of Wabeno bought the building in 1923 and eventually converted it into a library. It’s now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
When you step into the old library and walk across the creaky old floors you’ll know you’re someplace special. Browse the small collection of books or just soak up the history of this unique place.
Learn more about this old library on the Wabeno Public Library Facebook page. If you enjoy exploring Northwoods history, there’s a store in the middle of nowhere but it's so worth the journey.
