If you have a passion for chasing waterfalls then you know that West Virginia is just the place to do it. And before you ask Siri, "what are some waterfalls near me in West Virginia," check out the following adventure. One of the easiest and prettiest ways to get your fix is by hopping aboard a West Virginia train ride to see waterfalls. That's right: a waterfall train ride! You can ride the rails right to one of the Mountain State's most beautiful natural wonders and enjoy all of the breathtaking scenery along the way. This may just be one of the best train rides in the USA!
The words "waterfall" and "train" are not often used in the same sentence. But at the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad, these folks have put together an excursion that combines a 48-mile ride on the rails and a scenic waterfall destination!
You'll board the vintage train at the Elkins Depot to begin your four-hour scenic journey. Enjoy a relaxing ride in the climate-controlled passenger cars as you wind through the mountain wilderness.
The end destination may be a waterfall but the scenery along the way will leave you entranced. Climb alongside the tumbling Shavers Fork of the Cheat River as the train chugs its way to the High Falls of Cheat.
You'll travel through a magnificent tunnel, cross a high bridge, and admire fantastic mountain scenery the entire way. An all-you-can-eat sandwich buffet is offered for lunch along the way.
Don't forget your cameras! Photo opportunities are abundant both during the train ride and at the waterfall.
Arrive at the High Falls of Cheat and you'll be able to get out, stretch your legs, and take the brief walk to the jaw-dropping waterfall.
The falls are 18 feet high and stretch 150 feet across the river. Certainly, a dream come true for any waterfall chaser.
After you've gotten your waterfall fix, hop back aboard the train for the return trip. No napping! There's still plenty of beautiful scenery to take in on the way back to Elkins!
