Halloween is quickly approaching, and it's the perfect time to celebrate all things dark and creepy. It doesn't get much creepier than a real historical insane asylum that may just still be haunted. Check out some of the events happening over the next couple weeks.
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was a psychiatric hospital that operated from 1864 until 1994.
The hospital closed after new innovations in mental health treatments caused patients to seek more modern facilities.
During the time it was open, some of the "treatments" used on patients were pretty disturbing. Some patients were subjected to solitary confinement, electroshock therapy, and restraints.
This creepy landscape makes the perfect background for some scary Halloween activities.
Visitors can attend a haunted house or participate in Zombie Paintball.
On October 22, the facility will host its annual costume ball.
If you're more interested in the real history of the asylum, there are historical tours offered every day but Monday through November 5th, 2017.
The asylum's "nurses" will take you back in time.
If that's not quite creepy enough, try one of the nighttime ghost hunts.
Many visitors have experienced paranormal activity around the buildings. You just might meet a real ghost!
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is located at 50 S. River Ave., Weston, West Virginia. Visit their website for more information about the tours and special events.
