West Virginia has a variety of great caves to visit, but Smokehole Caverns is more than just a cave... it's a whole destination resort.
Smoke Hole Caverns Resort is located near the Potomac River in Grant County, West Virginia.
The resort is named after the beautiful cave on the property.
The cave got its name from its use by the Seneca Indians as a place to smoke wild game.
It also has a history as a place where early European settlers made moonshine.
You can tour the caverns all year round!
The cave only closes on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The tours last about an hour, and you'll see all sorts of beautiful cave formations, as well as an old still.
The resort also has the largest gift shop in West Virginia.
You'll be sure to find something you like here!
At the giftshop, you can purchase mining rough bags to sift for gemstones.
If you want to stay for a while, the resort has a variety of log cabins for rent.
You can have a cozy spot to relax by the fire as the nights get chilly.
In the resort and surrounding areas, you'll find fishing, hiking, and horseback riding to fill your days with adventure.
Or you can just take it easy and take in the peaceful scenery.
