If you're looking for a picturesque drive in the wild, wonderful Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, look no further than the Paint Creek Scenic Trail. This backroad route takes you from Tamarack in Beckley through the charming town of Pax (I mention that location in particular because OF COURSE you'll want to fill up like we did at The Corner Gas and Grill as you're passing through) all the way north to Pratt and the Kanawha River. Along the way, you can experience the stunning beauty and rich history of the Appalachian Mountains in all their glory.
The drive along Paint Creek Scenic Trail is nothing short of breathtaking, with winding roads that offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
The lush greenery, rolling hills, and crystal-clear waters of Paint Creek itself make for a truly unforgettable driving experience.
The Paint Creek Scenic Trail begins at the Tamarack cultural center and extends 44 miles north to Pratt.
It parallels the West Virginia Turnpike (I-77/I-64) and can be accessed from exits 44, 45, 54, 60, 66, 74.
Opting for the backroad route over the interstate makes for a longer trip, of course (the speed limit is much slower, the road is much narrower, and the curves are much tighter), but there's no toll and the chance to slow down and enjoy the scenery and the history that is so plentiful in this part of Appalachia is well worth the extra time if you have it.
Paint Creek was the site of West Virginia's first mine war, for one.
Mary Draper Ingles followed Paint Creek as a captive on her way to Fort Duqesne in Pittsburgh, for another.
