West Virginia offers some incredibly unique things to do and see, including many well-known museums that draw crowds of visitors each year. But the state also hides dozens of lesser-known attractions, including a one-of-a-kind virtual museum that you can explore from anywhere in the world.
A square storefront tucked away in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, houses a one-of-a-kind collection: the world's only U.S. Navy Poster Museum.
The museum is filled with U.S. Navy posters that span a variety of eras across three centuries, from 1889 all the way to the present.
And although the storefront location in downtown Point Pleasant isn't open for an in-person visit, you can now peruse the entire collection, made up of hundreds and hundreds of posters, for free online.
All you need to do is head over to the U.S. Naval Poster Museum Page on Facebook, where you can click through their many photo albums featuring a variety of topics, time periods, and artists.
Find an album dedicated to posters promoting WAVES, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.
Discover an album featuring posters that encouraged those on the homefront to contribute to the war effort.
Find examples of artists who depicted what the war was like for both soldiers and those they left behind.
Other themed collections include 9-11, World War I, World War II, Desert Storm, Patriotic Pinups, Submarines, and more. Works are also sorted by artist.
To learn more or to peruse this unique, diverse virtual collection for yourself, visit the photo albums on the US Navy Poster Museum Facebook Page. Did you know such a museum existed, let alone that it was based in West Virginia? There are actually several one-of-a-kind military museums in the state, including the World War Memorial in Kimball, honoring black soldiers of World War I.
