West Virginia is full of surprises... especially when it comes to ways to enjoy the local scenery. Last week, we featured an incredible boardwalk trail that winds through a jungle-like forest. Today, we're headed out on a lighthouse walk in our lovely land-locked state.
Summersville Lake in West Virginia is often called the "Little Bahamas of the East" for its clean and clear waters. Isn't only fitting that such a beautiful body of water should have its very own lighthouse?
Overlooking the lake and standing 104 feet tall, Summersville Lake Lighthouse was erected in 2012. It's the Mountain State's only lighthouse and if you haven't seen it yet, you'll want to start planning your trip.
Located at the Summersville Lake Retreat in Mount Nebo, the lighthouse walk consists of a trip right up to the top. Enjoy a 360-degree view from the viewing deck more than 2,000 feet above sea level.
You'll have to work a little bit to get there. Climb the winding staircase of 122 steps to take in the expansive and beautiful scenery.
Worth every step, the view from the top is breathtaking in every direction. View the park directly below and the amazing Summersville Lake just beyond.
The lighthouse is open daily April - October and by appointment November - March. There are even special sunset and full moon tours offered throughout the year.
After you've explored the lighthouse, you can rent pontoon boats, canoes, kayaks, and SUP boards to get out on the lake. Summersville Lake Resort also offers RV and tent camping if you want to extend your stay.
Don't have your own camping gear? Rent one of the deluxe cabins on site. The next time you're craving a little adventure, choose the unexpected and spend some time at West Virginia's lighthouse.
Admission to the lighthouse is $7 for adults and children 12 years and older. Children under 12 and seniors can enjoy the lighthouse for $5. Family and group rates are also available. Learn more about the Summersville Lighthouse and Lake Retreat by visiting their website or Facebook page. Address: 278 Summersville Lake Road (Hwy 129W), Mt Nebo, WV 26679
If your knees go week at the thought of climbing to the top of this lighthouse, keep your feet planted firmly on the ground when exploring this short scenic trail that leads to an incredible overlook.
