This candy shop is like no other in the nation, and we're lucky to have it right here in West Virginia! True Treats Historic Candy has treats like those made from the earliest time in history through the mid-1900s.
True Treats is a shop in Harpers Ferry that sells historic candies.
Inside, you'll find an incredible selection of sweets like those that were made decades or even centuries ago.
You'll find some candy that will remind you of your childhood...
...and some that will take you back to your grandmother's childhood!
Susan Benjamin founded the shop, and loves to give talks about the history behind our favorite treats.
She even wrote a book!
She explores the history of the earliest candies, made from things like seeds, nuts, gums, and honey.
The earliest chewing gum was made from tree resin.
Forest workers harvested the resin from spruce trees, and carved little boxes to hold the gum.
This type of praline was first made by slaves from pecans and molasses.
These candies from the 1700s were marketed as more than just a treat... they were sold as health food!
If you visit the store in Harpers Ferry, you'll be sure to come away with more than just bags of candy. You'll also bring home memories and stories from history!
