West Virginia is a state with a rich history that spans many eras and products. But perhaps one of the least recognized of her claims to fame are her incredibly artistic and diverse glassworks, from marbles to blown glass ... and more. And there's even a museum in West Virginia that honors all things glass-related: the Museum of American Glass in Weston.
As you walk down the streets of Weston, West Virginia, you may have noticed the huge, colorful, gorgeous window displays at the Museum of American Glass.
But why stop at just gazing at these fabulous pieces through the window? While donations are welcome and appreciated, admission is always absolutely free, so there's nothing to keep you from going inside and taking an up close and personal look around at all the beautiful displays this museum has to offer.
Dedicated to discovering, publishing, and preserving anything related to the glass industry, both in West Virginia and around the globe, this non-profit pursues their mission whole-heartedly. Once inside, expect to find rows upon rows of glass cases housing thousands of beautiful, well-documented glass objects.
There's glass everywhere you look: right, left, up, down. There are even dozens of working glass fixtures hanging from the ceiling!
And lest you think that you would never take a child into a museum full of fragile glass, think again - the museum has done an excellent job of making several of their displays very educational and kid-friendly.
While the museum does proudly display many items made right here in West Virginia, they don't limit themselves to just local glassworks. They collect, display, and teach the history of glass items from around the nation and even the world.
Stop by any day of the week to wander through their many fascinating displays and learn all about the history of glass production both locally and nationally.
Even if you can't make it to Weston in person to see this art, you can view many of the museum's collections online! To learn more about the museum's hours, location, and displays, visit their informative, easy to navigate website or their frequently updated Facebook page.
