Sometimes you don't have the budget for a luxurious vacation, but still want to have a day of fun. Here are some great free activities that you can find around the Mountain State.
1. See the unusual rock formations at Beartown State Park.
Hiking through these rocks is sure to spark your imagination. Beartown State Park is located seven miles southwest of Hillsboro, WV on U.S. Route 219.
2. View a glass-blowing demonstration.
You can stop by the workshop at Blenko Glass Comany and see a free glass-blowing demonstration. Then check out the gift shop! Address: 9 Bill Blenko Drive, Milton, WV 25541.
3. Hike to the ghost town of Kaymoor.
A short but steep hike will take you to this ghost town in Fayette County, where a few buildings and some mining equipment still remain.
4. Hike in Dolly Sods.
This high elevation area of West Virginia has a climate and plant life similar to the Alaskan tundra. It's beautiful any time of year, but especially worth a visit when it bursts into color in the fall.
5. Learn to sail.
The Sewell Mountain Sailing Association of West Virginia is an organization dedicated to making the art of sailing available to anyone in West Virginia. They give free lessons on Summersville Lake. You can find out more on their website.
6. Visit West Virginia's lost state park.
Much of the former park's land has been sold, but the lodge has been turned into a geological study and museum. You can read more about it here.
7. Visit Babcock State Park.
In addition to acres of natural beauty, this park also has a working grist mill which is used to grind grain, which visitors can purchase. Read more about the park here.
8. Take a ride on the Locust Heights Railroad.
This little steam engine train takes visitors on a short ride. It operates Wednesday evenings June-October. The address is 115 Locust Heights Dr, Clarksburg, West Virginia 26301. You can read more about it here.
9. See a musical performance at Pickin' In The Park.
Local musicians provide free concerts year round in Chief Logan State Park on Friday and Saturday evenings. Address: 435 Sang Creek Road, Logan, WV 25601
10. Visit the West Virginia State museum.
This museum has all things related to the history of West Virginia, with activities and exhibits for all ages. It's open Tuesday-Saturday from 9-5. Address: 1900 Kanawha Blvd E, Charleston, West Virginia.
