You probably already know that the West Virginia Capitol Building is the tallest in the state. But what you may not know is that the architect who designed it loved it so much that he later reused the same design for a portion of the U.S. Supreme Court Building in Washington D.C.
The tallest (and arguably most beautiful) building in West Virginia was designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert.
Gilbert was a personal friend of President Taft, and his other designs include the Woolworth Building, the United States Supreme Court building, the state capitols of Minnesota and Arkansas, and the Saint Louis Art Museum and Public Library.
In 1930, construction began, and $10,000,000 and two years later, the capitol building was complete.
It turned out amazing.
In fact, Architect Cass loved it so much that a few years later, he re-used the design of the chamber in the East Wing of the West Virginia Capitol for the United States Supreme Court Chamber in Washington, D.C.
It's easy to see why Cass Gilbert fell in love with this iconic building.
Not only is the outside impressively regal, but the inside is awe-inspiring as well.
Everywhere you look, you'll see surfaces full of color, shape, and pattern.

The City of Charleston and the State of West Virginia would not be the same without it.
And we daresay the folks who use the U.S. Supreme Court Chamber would agree.
Have you toured the state capital of Charleston, with its iconic capitol building? It's well worth a visit when you get a chance, as is the Culture Center, a free West Virginia history museum hiding inside.
What buildings around West Virginia do you think could compete with the capitol as one of the most beautiful structures in the state? We'd love to add them to our list!
