There's so much to love about West Virginia. Mountains. Gorges. Bridges. Old mills. The people. And... the mineral springs. For years, tourists have been traveling to West Virginia from far and wide - since before we were even a state, in fact - to enjoy our healing mineral springs. As a result, West Virginia can proudly lay claim to America's very first spa: Berkeley Springs. And what's even more interesting is that you can still visit the original American spa for yourself. Not only that, but you can still enjoy a soak in its healing, warm, relaxing mineral water.
Did you know there's an old Roman bath house in West Virginia?
It's located on the grounds of Berkeley Springs State Park and managed by the state of West Virginia.
When we say old bath house, we mean it. The present building was constructed in 1820 as a replacement for a bath house built at the same site in the 1780s.
But even though it's been around awhile, it's still open to the public seven days a week all year long.
The hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Enjoy a stroll through the beautiful, historic grounds and then melt your stress away with a soak in the mineral spring water.
It's free to splash in the warm pools outside the bath house, but it's worth reserving a private room inside the Roman bath house for a longer, more relaxing experience.
Inside, you'll find nine private, tiled swimming baths that are nine feet long, five feet wide, and four feet deep. The baths are filled with the warm spring water, but it's heated even further, up to 102 degrees Farenheit (if that's too hot for you, just mention that when you make your reservation).
The baths have been recently renovated, and one of the nine is handicapped accessible.
