If you've been a fan of West Virginia for any time at all, you already know that the Mountain State is full of fascinatingly creepy museums. It's because we have such a fascinatingly creepy history! We've got museums dedicated to Mothman, Bigfoot, and the Flatwoods Monster, all of which have been sighted in West Virginia. But perhaps the scariest of all the collections to be found in West Virginia is the collection of artifacts known as the Archive of the Afterlife, the National Museum of the Paranormal.
If you were creating the nation's premier paranormal museum, what kind of museum would you design? For starters, maybe you would house it in a haunted building.
That's exactly what the folks who developed the Archive of the Afterlife, also known as the National Museum of the Paranormal, did. Welcome to the haunted old Sanford School building at 86 Railroad Street in Cameron, West Virginia.
If you're not familiar with Cameron, West Virginia, it's located in the Northern Panhandle, about half an hour southeast of Moundsville.
What else would you expect to find in a paranormal museum? Maybe an electric chair execution cap used to kill nine inmates of the West Virginia Penitentiary Center?
Maybe some letters and other artifacts from the World Wars?
Maybe a collection of coffins, both adult and child sized, along with other funeral accessories?
All this and much more can be found here at the Archive of the Afterlife, where every item in the collection is either haunted or has a gruesome story attached... or both.
Have you ever visited the Archive of the Afterlife in West Virginia? Did you experience anything paranormal while you were here? Did you know that the museum accepts donations of any haunted items you might have that you'd like to pass along? So they're always adding new things to their archive.
To learn more about the operating hours and admission prices of the Archive of the Afterlife or their list of artifacts, visit the museum's website here or their Facebook page here. For more spooky experiences, try those other West Virginia museums we mentioned earlier - Bigfoot, Mothman, or Flatwoods Monster.
