Whether you’re an all out history buff or you just enjoy learning about pieces of our past, visiting a local museum is an educational and interesting experience. Washington has some wonderfully unique museums that offer something for every interest - but if you only have time to visit one, you should make it the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma. It’s the perfect place to learn more of our state’s story.
The Washington State History Museum is located at 1911 Pacific Avenue.
You’ll find it near the Tacoma Art Museum, Le May - America’s Car Museum, and connected to the Tacoma’s Museum of Glass. If you’ve got the time, you can see all four museums in seven days for $45.
The museum’s permanent exhibits tell the story of Washington’s history, highlighting the characters and events that have had an impact on our growth.
The Washington History exhibit takes you back through time, showcasing some of our earliest moments.
Check out the Native American artifacts, learn about native culture, learn about Washington’s progression through statehood, women’s suffrage, and so much more.
You can even see Ezra Meeker’s actual oxen, Dave and Dandy.
Ezra Meeker was an American pioneer who traveled the Oregon trail in his ox-drawn wagon and ended up serving as Puyallup’s first mayor.
You’ll always find fun temporary exhibits here as well.
The 21st annual Model Train Festival starts on December 17 and is a must-see for train enthusiasts of all ages.
Don’t miss the gorgeous Chihuly Bridge of Glass that connects the building to the Museum of Glass.
Dale Chihuly’s glass art has had a huge impact on Washington.
The Washington State History Museum offers a wonderfully comprehensive look at our state’s past. Through next April, the museum’s "A Revolution You Can Dance To: Indie Music in the Northwest" exhibit will be featured. Once you’ve seen the museum and have a new appreciation for local culture, head out to have the most Washington day ever.
