We have some impressive chain grocery stores in Washington (we love you, Trader Joe's). That being said, sometimes it's fun to check out some of our smaller, locally owned markets that carry local produce and Washington-made products or more exotic ingredients than you'll find anywhere else.

These 10 lesser known Washington supermarkets are especially amazing:

1. Petunias Market, 2010 N Madison St., Spokane

Don't be fooled by this little market's quaint exterior. Inside you'll find plenty of fresh local produce, specialty foods and organic ingredients. Plus, the owner is known for being friendly and helpful.

2. Cone & Steiner, Seattle

If you've ever wondered what it was like to shop at an old-fashioned general store, check out Cone & Steiner for the next best thing. With locations on Capitol Hill and in Pioneer Square, this little market is pretty popular among those who live nearby. They carry all the basic grocery staples plus unique gifts, candy, and local beer and wine.

3. TERRA Organic & Natural Foods, 1530 Cornwall Ave., Bellingham

Located inside the Bellingham Public Market, this little market has a special place in the heart of the Bellingham locals who have discovered it. If you have time, stop by the cafe before you leave - the coffee is wild-harvested from self-propagating coffee plants, and it's delicious.

4. Tacoma Boys, 5602 6th Ave., Tacoma

Tacoma Boys is a treasure trove of fresh local produce, grocery staples and hard-to-find food items. They've always got a great selection of top quality meat and seafood.

5. Blue Mountain Station, 700 Artisan Way, Dayton

Blue Mountain Station is a foodie's dream. With 6 small food processors, a commercial kitchen, an on-site garden, and a co-op market, shopping here means experiencing food in a whole new way. The Dayton community is a lucky one indeed.

6. Country Mercantile, 232 Crestloch Rd., Pasco

For the record, Country Mercantile is only "little-known" to those who don't live near Pasco... everyone in the Tri-Cities area knows how great it is. This family owned and operated market has been around since 1966, and you'll find treasures like homemade ice cream, fresh chips and salsa, tamales and a deli inside.

7. Farm Fresh Market, 2010 Black Lake Blvd. SW, Olympia

Farm Fresh Market is like a grocery store, Farmers Market and a co-op all rolled into one. They sell good, wholesome food (and amazing rotisserie chicken).

8. Uwajimaya, 600 5th Ave. S., Seattle

Uwajimaya is one of the largest Asian supermarkets in the Pacific Northwest, but most people outside of Seattle don't know it exists. They have a 30,000 item grocery selection, meat, seafood, wine, beer, sake and an epic food court.

9. Skagit Valley Food Co-op, 202 S 1st St., Mount Vernon

It would be easy to spend an entire afternoon here. Downstairs you'll find a full supermarket, a bakery, a deli and plenty of homemade ice cream. Head upstairs to enjoy your lunch at one of the tables and shop for unique local gifts.

10. Food Co-Op, 414 Kearney St., Port Townsend

Stop by this locally owned market on your next trip to Port Townsend. This full-service organic foods market sells all kinds of delicious goodies.
