The best things in life are free, especially in Washington. As we transition from one of the dreariest winters in recent history into another beautiful summer, it's time to get outside and enjoy our beautiful state. And, you can do that without spending a dime.
1. Take a walk through the Bellevue Botanical Garden.
Located at 12001 Main Street, this beautiful garden is open daily, and admission is always free.
2. Catch an outdoor movie.
Several of our cities and towns offer free outdoor movies, like this one at Seattle's Magnuson Park.
3. Walk or bike the Centennial Trail.
The 37.5 mile Centennial Trail starts in downtown Spokane, taking you through Riverside State Park and some of Eastern Washington's most beautiful scenery.
4. Spend a day at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood.
From the playground to the lakeside trails, there's something for everyone here.
5. Walk through one of our amazing Farmers Markets.
Of course it costs money to buy, but walking through (and sometimes sampling) is totally free.
6. Explore the WW Seymour Botanical Conservatory in Tacoma.
They're open daily from10-4:30, and admission is free.
7. Enjoy some free live entertainment at one of your local parks.
You might be surprised by how many parks and other public locations offer free live music during the summertime. Riverfront Park in Spokane, Spokane Valley’s Mirabeau Point Park and Seattle's University Village are just a few examples.
8. Walk the 3 mile Cowiche Canyon Trail in the Yakima Valley.
It's part of the Cowiche Conservatory, and the trail is great for people of all skill levels.
9. Wander through the Ballard Locks in Seattle.
The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are a link for ships moving between Puget Sound and lakes Union and Washington. On any given day, you'll see plenty of locals and tourists out watching the boats go by.
10. Check out a local art walk.
Most places in Washington have monthly art walk, typically on the first Thursday or Friday of the month. It's a great way to get to know local artists.
11. Enjoy the best view of the Seattle skyline without spending a dime.
Forget spending the money for the Space Needle. At Gasworks Park (2101 N. Northlake Way), the incredible views are free.
Of course, a great way to enjoy the outdoors in Washington is to go for a hike. Here are a few trails that are great for all skill levels.
