As we enjoy the last weeks of summer, it's important to take advantage of all the wonderful things this season offers. From longer days to warmer nights, there's nothing more dreamy than a summer in Virginia. If you're wondering how to fill the calendar with some last minute summer getaways, the following list should help you get started.
1. Visit Virginia's hidden water park.
If you thought water parks were for kids only, think again! Atlantis Waterpark in Centreville offers epic waterslides, a tranquil swimming area and plenty of space to lounge. The park is open until Labor Day, so be sure to get some swimming in before it's too late. For directions and more information, click here.
2. Take a trip out to the scenic Claytor Lake.
This gorgeous lake lends itself to all sorts of summery activities: swimming, boating, fishing and more. Plus, there's plenty of hiking trails nearby and even a man-made beach for lounging. You can even rent a cabin on property for a weekend getaway. For information and more, click here.
3. Witness an unforgettable sunset.
While there's really no wrong way to view a gorgeous sunset in Virginia, Mason Neck State Park offers one of the most exquisite views. Belmont Bay creates a stunning reflection that seems to magnify the effect of the sun dipping below the horizon. Be sure to bring your camera! For directions and more information, click here.
4. Spend the night in a secluded "glamp" ground...
If you've yet to try glamping, it's a one-of-a-kind experience that brings together the rugged surroundings of camping while offering the comfort and amenities of an inn. Rose River Farm offers beautiful yurts tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains that can offer that very experience. For reservations and additional information, click here.
5...or opt for the more traditional camping experience.
Virginia offers plenty of incredible campgrounds, one of which is located inside Fairy Stone State Park. Nestled near a picturesque 168-acre lake, these sites offer some of the best natural attractions that VA has to offer. It's the perfect end-of-summer outing for the whole family. 6. Explore a natural spring.
Located in Warm Springs, Virginia awaits a unique natural treasure that relatively few know about. Blowing Springs is a natural spring, meaning the underground water comes forth freely from the ground and isn't effected by the air's temperature. The most amazing feature of all is the area's name sake, a natural air duct that blows 58 degree air from the rocks. It's nature's own A.C.! For more information as well as directions to the site, click here.
7. Visit Virginia's top-secret beach.
Sandbridge Beach isn't exactly a secret to locals, but compared to the popularity of Virginia Beach, it's virtually uncrowded. These soft sands and gorgeous ocean views are enough to keep you at peace until winter time. For more information on this natural haven, click here.
8. Plan a mountain lake getaway.
Peaks of Otter Lodge is one of the most breathtaking accommodations in the whole state. Situated near a gorgeous mountain lake, you'll feel worlds away from it all. Although chances are, you won't have to travel more than a couple hours to get there. For more information, click here.
9. Take a boardwalk hike.
A visit to Back Bay Wildlife Refuge is sure to amaze visitors of all ages. With insight into the unique ecosystem, wildlife watching, and a meandering boardwalk hike, this destination is perfect for an afternoon outing. For directions and more information on Back Bay Refuge, click here.
10. Treat yourself to homemade ice cream from Island Creamery.
Island Creamery may not be easy to get to for everyone - it's located on Chincoteague Island, after all - but believe us when we say it'll be worth the trip. This beloved ice cream shop offers homemade ice cream in just about every flavor. Plus, your time spent on Chincoteague will certainly be memorable. For more information, click here.
11. Take a float down a natural lazy river.
Tubing is one of our favorite summer past times here in Virginia, and nowhere is the scenery more gorgeous than in Luray. Shenandoah River Outfitters offer daily excursions for tubing and also canoeing. The only responsibility you'll have is to enjoy the ride. For directions and more, click here.
