Breaks Interstate Park is one of many jewels in the crown of natural beauty that is southwestern Virginia.
The bi-state park is located on the border of Kentucky and Virginia inside Jefferson National Forest. No matter the time of year you choose to visit, you'll be awe-inspired by the vastness of the landscape.
While most people visit in hopes of peering down into the breaks, nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the South, there's another reason to visit the park and it's no less majestic.
While most consider elk to be creatures that inhabit the mountains of the western U.S. and other high-elevation areas, few realize these magical creatures can be found right here in Virginia.
Virginia recently joined with Kentucky in an effort to repopulate the Appalachian Mountains with elk. The elk you'll observe on the tour are part of the Virginia Elk Restoration Zone.
Once you've reserved your tickets for the tour, you'll meet across from the Visitor's Center 15 minutes early, board the bus, and let the adventure begin.
Elk are native to the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. The creatures were hunted to the point of near extinction in the area; however, efforts to restore these populations will ensure that the elk can once again find a home in the beautiful Virginia mountains.
The guided tour will take you to locations within the park where the elk are known to gather.
If you happen to take the tour during the spring, you may even stumble upon shed elk antlers. In the fall, during mating season, it's not uncommon to hear elk bugling or see a fight between two bulls.
