With Halloween just around the corner, it's the perfect time to test your nerves and see who's afraid of ghosts. Think you're not afraid? Well, we suggest you head to these areas which are supposedly the best places to spot a ghost in Vermont to see for yourself!
1. Southern Vermont College, Bennington
There are many ghost stories here, including hauntings by people (one in a black hooded cloak), smoke filled hallways, doors and windows locking/unlocking, footsteps, and more. The two most haunted areas are on the third floor of the mansion as well as the former sleeping quarters for the staff where a maid hung herself.
2. Bennington College, Jennings Hall
Figures - including a black hooded robed figure - smoke filled hallways, footsteps heard, doors being locked/unlocked, and many more spooky reports come from this place in Southern Vermont.
3. Champlain College, Burlington
Almost every building here is said to be haunted. From a boy in an orange t-shirt appearing to toilets flushing on their own, the ghost stories are abundant.
4. Saint Michael's College, Colchester
Tales here include the friendly nun who assists actors in the theater and an evil presence that began after an occult incident. There is reportedly a pentagram that reappears despite attempts to cover it up with wood.
5. Johnson Elementary School, Johnson
Ghosts are said to have been seen watching people through the windows as well as throughout the rest of the school. The bell in the tower has rung and footsteps heard throughout the building are among the many reports of these haunted halls.
6. Equinox Hotel, Manchester
Largely considered the most haunted hotel in Vermont, most reports of the hauntings here are said to happen in room 346. Be prepared for your things to be inexplicably stacked up!
7. Norwich University, Northfield
From the boarded off room where two brothers hung themselves years apart to the ghostly appearances in the dining room, to the books flying off shelves, Norwich University may not be the place to get a degree if you're afraid of the supernatural.
8. Green Mountain Inn, Stowe
Room 302 is the most haunted at this downtown Stowe hotel. Boots Berry, the tap dancing ghost, was born in this room, and died above it when he rescued a little girl on the roof during a snowstorm. Tap dancing can be heard coming from the roof on snowy nights.
9. The Equinox, Manchester
Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd, and their children still wander around this hotel where they summered long ago. This is said to be the most haunted hotel in all of Vermont!
10. Brattleboro Retreat Tower, Brattleboro

11. Norwich Inn, Norwich
Room 20 is haunted by a woman who died in the room, but the ghostly sightings aren't isolated to this room. She also makes occasional appearances in the dining room donning a dark formal dress, but don't worry - she never bothers anyone.
12. Golden Stage Inn Bed and Breakfast, Cavindish
Go and meet George, the friendly ghost who loves to play pranks on the innkeepers. In fact, the innkeepers became so familiar with this ghost who appears in a cloak and wide brimmed hat, that it was them who named him George. Well, they had to call him something!
13. White House Inn, Wilmington
Cold spots, doors slamming and visible apparitions have been reported here, but the most disturbing report was from a guest woken up by an elderly woman who said "One Mrs. Brown in this room is quite enough!" Guess what the guest's last name was? Yup! Brown.
14. Emily's Bridge, Stowe
Legend has it that the Gold Brook Bridge, also known as "Emily’s Bridge" is haunted by a ghost named Emily. There are many stories of how Emily died on the bridge. The most popular is that she was supposed to elope with a lover who was meeting her at the bridge, and when he didn't show, she hung herself from the rafters. Even the locals are a bit leery of this place since sightings, noises and lights have all been reported over the years.
15. Vermont Police Academy, Pittsford
The Vermont Police Academy was once a state hospital for tuberculosis patients, and it is said to still be haunted by a nurse named Mary who worked here during that era and had contracted TB herself. All of the old call buttons are still in the recruits' rooms, and it is said that if pushed, the friendly ghost of the nurse, Mary, will pay a visit during the night.
If haunted places aren't enough to send shivers down your spine, how about an entire haunted neighborhood in Vermont?
