Cemeteries in Vermont are hauntingly beautiful. Not only will you find intricately carved monuments from local granite, but the settings and scenery are out of a dream. Let's take a look at some of the most intriguing gravesites in VT that will give you chills in the best way.
1. Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven
Timothy Clark Smith was terrified of being buried alive, so he arranged for his grave to have a window. This way, if he was not dead, someone would see and rescue him. He passed away in 1893 and this grave was designed with a cement tube which led down to his face and it's covered with a 14x14 inch piece of glass. You can't see down now, but it's still pretty creepy.
The Evergreen Cemetery is located at
749 North St., New Haven, VT 05472
2. Green Mount Cemetery, Montpelier
There are many monuments of interest here, but perhaps the most fascinating is the legend of "Black Agnes." Black Agnes is actually a large statue titled Thanatos, meaning "death" in Greek. The story goes that if you sit on the statue's lap you will encounter three strikes of bad luck, have a large amount of misfortune, or you will die in seven days.
The Green Mount Cemetery is located at 250 State St., Montpelier, VT 05602

8. Brattleboro Retreat Cemetery, Brattleboro
Over 700 names are listed in the Asylum's burial journal, but this small piece of land couldn't hold that many bodies. It is unknown where many are actually buried.
The Brattleboro Retreat Cemetery is located at 1 Anna Marsh Ln., Brattleboro, VT 05302
9. Prospect Hill Cemetery, Brattleboro
This large cemetery located close to the center of town was once known as the Village Burial Ground. One area which is known as the "Poor Section" has few stones and was used for patients of the Vermont Asylum. The stones are placed with large amounts of space between them, indicating that there may be many unmarked graves here. It is believed that the earliest patients to die at the Asylum were buried here, and perhaps this is where the others who were listed in the Brattleboro Retreat Cemetery were laid to rest.
