Don't you love a snowy Utah day? We usually get a break from the inversion when a storm blows through, and everything looks like a magical wonderland covered in a soft blanket of snow. While you might just snuggle up with a blanket in front of the window and watch the snow, here are 11 other things you can do on a snowy day in the Beehive State.
1. Take the kids to the Discovery Gateway Children's Museum.
Let your kids burn off some energy at the Discovery Gateway Children's Museum. They can get some exercise and find an outlet for their creative energy, too. The museum is located at 444 W. 100 S., Salt Lake City. While you're at The Gateway, swing by the Clark Planetarium, too!
2. Visit your nearest library.
There's nothing quite like curling up with a book on a snowy winter day. The Salt Lake City Main Branch, at 210 E. 400 S., Salt Lake City, has entire walls of windows and plenty of cozy seating.
3. Say hello to the sea creatures at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium.
You'll be nice and warm at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, where you can see the penguins frolicking in the Antarctic Adventure exhibit, walk through the 40-foot shark tunnel in the Ocean Explorer exhibit, see the river otters at the Discover Utah exhibit, and much more. 12033 Lone Peak Parkway, Draper.
4. Take a wagon ride to visit the elk at Hardware Ranch.
The elk viewing season runs between now and February 26th. Bundle up and take a wagon ride to get up close to the elk Friday through Monday. The cost is just $5 for adults and $3 for children. You'll find the ranch in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, Logan.
5. Speed down the slopes on an inner tube.
Bundle up, find the nearest hill, and take a ride! You'll feel like a kid again as you speed down the snowy slopes. If you'd rather enjoy the luxury of a tow rope and groomed hills, try Soldier Hollow in Midway.
6. Snuggle into a seat at the Eccles Theater and enjoy a performance.
Salt Lake City's new Eccles Theater offers evening performances during weekdays, and both matinees and evening shows on the weekends. What better way to spend a snowy afternoon? 131 S. Main Street, Salt Lake City.
7. Go on a snowshoe adventure.
It doesn't take much to enjoy snowshoeing in Utah. Just find a trail, strap on some snowshoes and head out! If you're new to the sport, try the Solitude Nordic Center in Big Cottonwood Canyon. You can rent snowshoes there and take an easy loop hike around Silver Lake.
8. Scuba, snorkel or just soak in the Homestead Crater.
The geothermal crater at The Homestead is covered by a 55-foot-tall limestone covering that keeps it nice and warm. The temperature of the water is a consistent 90-96 degrees, and you'll have a blast playing or relaxing in this cozy cavern. 700 N. Homestead Drive, Midway.
9. Head for Fifth Water Hot Springs
Fifth Water Hot Springs in Springville is a great choice if you're looking for a free activity. Though there's snow on the ground, the springs are nice and warm. The area can be busy on the weekends, but if you can manage a mid-week visit, you'll likely find some peace and quiet.
10. For a special treat, head to Grand America Hotel for afternoon tea.
Enjoy some delicious hot chocolate, tea and cakes at Grand America's High Tea, held Monday through Sunday, with seatings at 1 PM and 3:30 PM. 555 S. Main Street, Salt Lake City.
