There is a reason Moab and the surrounding area are extremely popular — it is stunning. While there are many hikes and scenic drives near Moab that we often recommend today, we have a new way to explore this breathtaking part of the Beehive State — the annual Skinny Tire Festival. Taking place from Mar. 9 through Mar. 12, 2024, this 4-day Utah event is one unforgettable way to explore, admire, and move. Check it out.
Have you ever explored Moab on a bike? The 23rd annual Skinny Tire Festival allows you to do just that. During this bucket-list-worthy adventure, you will admire beautiful red rocks, a national park, a state park, and many other natural wonders all while on your road bike.
The Skinny Tire Festival has become a popular event in Moab each spring. It was created by Mark Griffith who wanted a way to deal with the grief of losing his older brother to cancer. This festival started out small, with just 12 riders, but has since grown to raise millions of dollars for cancer foundations and beneficiaries.
During this 4-day event, you will hop on your road bike and go on an adventure. On day one, you will travel up to 64 miles to Dead Horse Point State Park.
This state park is home to one of the most photographed overlooks in the world and you’ll certainly want a camera to capture the view. You will gain more than 3,000 feet in elevation on this ride but don’t worry, shorter ride options are available.
One day two, you’ll follow along the beautiful Colorado River. You’ll travel over rolling hills and next to sandstone cliffs. It truly is inspiring.
On day three, get ready to cycle 42 miles in Arches National Park. Lunch is provided at Devils Garden inside the park. We challenge you to count how many natural arches you will see during this day-long ride.
The last day of this festival is a ride along Highway 279, also known as Potash Moab Scenic Byway. This ride has it all from river and red rock views to even 1,000-year-old Anasazi petroglyphs.
Keep in mind that some rides, such as through Arches National Park, are limited in numbers. You will want to register in advance for these rides as they do fill up quickly. You can begin all rides on your own time and there is no time limit to complete them.
