It's a running joke here in Texas that we have about two weeks of winter and summer for the remainder of the year. Although that might be a bit of an exaggeration, there is some truth to it - which could actually be a good thing. We may not enjoy white Christmases, but we can go to the beach, fish, and hike in the middle of December. I'd take that over snow any day. The following are ten activities in the Lone Star State that you can do no matter what time of year it is - and they just might be even more fun in the winter!
1. Moody Gardens (Galveston)
This iconic Galveston attraction is a year-round activity. Since the rainforest, aquarium, and discovery pyramids are indoors, they can be enjoyed no matter the season. And while you might be able to splash the day away at Palm Beach during the summer, you can marvel at millions of lights at the Festival of Lights in the wintertime. 2. The River Walk (San Antonio)
Strolling down the famous River Walk is fun no matter what time of year it is, but especially so this time of year. Through January 7, over 100,000 lights draped over towering cypress trees on either side of the water are turned on from dusk until dawn. It's easily one of the most magical holiday sights of the season.
3. Ice skating (Houston)
It doesn't have to be cold outside to enjoy a day on the ice! The Houston Galleria has an enormous ice rink that's open year-round, making it perfect for birthday parties or just a new and different family activity. More information here.
4. Going to the beach
Whether it's Galveston or South Padre, the beach can be enjoyed whether it's January or July. Some people complain about our lack of a white Christmas (or a real winter at all), but personally, I'd rather catch some rays in the middle of winter than freeze to death underneath ten layers of clothing.
5. Fishing
Since our waters are warm for much of the year, there's never really a break in the fishing season. Here are some of the best spots in the state to catch yourself a delicious supper!
6. Bird watching (Mission)
Different types of birds come out at different times of year, so we can observe our feathered friends in the winter and the summer. This time of year is arguably the best for bird watching in Texas, especially down south. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park near Mission is one of the most ecologically diverse places in the state, with over 358 species of bird making their homes here. More information here.
7. Eating Blue Bell
Need I say more? Even if our winters got down into the negatives, we'd still be bundled up in front of the fireplace with a gallon of Blue Bell and a spoon. It's called dedication, y'all.
8. Taking a hike
Winter might actually be a better time to take a hike in Texas! I don't know about you, but I'd much rather wear a light jacket and be comfortable than sweat to death in as little clothing as possible. This time of year, you can actually take in all the beautiful sights without constantly worrying about when you'll get water next or where a shady spot is. Here are some of our favorite hikes in Texas.
9. Going on a road trip
Road trips never go out of style - especially Texas road trips. There's just so much to see in our state that it would be impossible to try and fit it all into one season! Check out these 16 awesome trips if you're in need of ideas.
10. Doing some stargazing (Big Bend)
There's a lot of uncharted territory in Texas, and that makes for some stunning night skies. Lucky for us, Big Bend Ranch State Park was just certified as an International Dark Sky Park, so this unadulterated night sky will be preserved forever. More information on that here.
How many of these activities have you done? What else would you add to this list?
