While people think of Texas as the state where everything's bigger, it's also the king of weird, apparently! We have mentioned these places before, but in case you forgot about them, you should definitely check them out for your daily dose of all things weird and ridiculous in Texas.
1) America's Only Glass Bathrooms With See-Through Walls (Sulphur Springs)
Nope, your eyes aren't deceiving you..it's actually true! But don't worry, the people inside can see outside, but not the other way around. Why they were built, I have no idea, but if you want to try them out for yourself, you'll find them in Sulphur Springs outside of the courthouse. (Let us know how the experience was, by the way!)
2) Toilet Seat Museum (San Antonio)
Barney Smith, the founder, will happily tell you the story behind each toilet seat and lid, for no extra charge. By the way, if you have any extra toilet seat lids or seats lying around, feel free to donate them to the museum!
3) Art Car Museum (Houston)
Come see the "Garage Mahal" of Houston, full of cars plastered with odds and ends and paintings. You definitely won't find this anywhere else!
4) National Museum of Funeral History (Houston)
Also located in Houston, you'll find this museum chock-full of everything you ever wanted to know about funerals. You can learn about embalming and burial methods, as well as look around at the largest collection of funeral artifacts in the country. Sounds like a fun time, right?!
5) Starship Pegasus (Italy)
If you want to spice up a road trip, look no further than this starship in Italy just off I-35. It used to be a restaurant and family entertainment center, but closed in 2007. However, it still makes for an unusual photo opportunity and something interesting to tell your friends and family when you get back from a trip! Also, the property is available if you'd like to make the starship your own cosmic home or restaurant. Any takers?
6) Cathedral of Junk (Austin)
If you want to see 60 tons of junk piled up in someone's backyard, Austin will once again meet your desires for the strange and weird. Vince Hannemann is the man you're looking for - he began his project of collecting discarded items in 1989, and he's not anywhere near done with his cathedral of the old, tossed out, and rusting items. Just call ahead if you want to come see the structure; it's free and open often. Also, you can rent it out for parties, weddings, and other special events. Only in Texas, and only in Austin...
7) Beer Can House (Houston)
The days of vinyl siding and boring brick houses have passed us by - now, we can welcome in a new age of aluminum beer can siding on all houses! Hey, it makes a good use of recycled materials, I'd say! The owner said it took him 18 years to put all the beer cans on the house, and Ripley's Believe It Or Not estimates that over 50,000 beer cans adorn the house!
8) Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo)
No visit to Texas is complete without paying a visit to our very own collection of Cadillacs half-buried in the ground, right?
9) Munster Mansion (Waxahachie)
Ever wanted to take a tour of the creepy mansion in "The Munsters" sitcom? Well, I'm here to tell you that your dreams have come true! This exact replica of the Munster Mansion was the creative idea and lifelong dream of the McKee family, and you can schedule a tour through their website.
10) Orange Show (Houston)
This menagerie of random objects somehow turned into a vibrant and quirky display of artistic expression attracts folk artists from all over the country.
What other weird places can we check out in the Lone Star State? Please let us know in the comments!
