Texas is immensely beautiful, but it also has a rich history that's created a foundation for some pretty terrifying places. Whether they had a gruesome, war-torn past or are more recent haunts, here are 15 of the most horrifying places in Texas that are sure to chill you to the very core.
Freedman Ranch in San Marcos is home to over 50 decomposing bodies. The farm was created by Texas State University as a hands-on experiment allowing students to observe how bodies break down after death. Neat, but definitely eerie.
Ranked the third most haunted hotel in the entire world, the Emily Morgan in San Antonio was a medical arts facility (read: hospital) before being renovated into a hotel. Just think about how many people died there...if you choose to spend the night, you're in for a fright!
An unusual spot for a haunting, Houston's Spaghetti Warehouse is one of the most haunted restaurants in our nation. It used to be a pharmacy before one of the workers met his/her unfortunate demise by falling down a gaping elevator shaft. Customers and employees alike have reported seeing and hearing paranormal activity throughout the building (but primarily on the second floor).
This unnerving village of fully built, abandoned homes is a surreal sight to see. They look completely habitable, but aren't even wired for electricity or plumbing. If you click on the words "Tundra Village" above, you'll find a haunting video with awesome aerial footage of the entire neighborhood.
5. Fort Wolters
Fort Wolters was an Army base and a German POW camp during WWII. Post-war, it became an Air Force base specializing in training Air Force engineers. It was deactivated in 1973, remaining intact but housing only somber, gruesome wartime memories.
6. Camp Lulu
Hiking through Camp Lulu will give you chills like you've never experienced before. The former girls' summer camp was shut down after a deranged counselor murdered all of the campers - you just might see some of them for yourself.
Every Halloween, the Jefferson Railway does a themed train ride that people of all ages can enjoy. Hear spooky tales as you ride on a locomotive completely covered in decorations.
8. Hotel Galvez
Hotel Galvez is said to be haunted by the "Lovelorn Lady," the wife of a fisherman who died in a tragic sea accident. After hearing the news, she hung herself in a room on the 5th floor. Are you brave enough to stay there?
9. The Alamo
The Alamo is easily one of the most haunted landmarks in Texas. It was the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the history of our state, so it makes sense that a number of war-torn spirits haunt its grounds.
10. Aurora Cemetery
The thought of UFOs existing might be laughable to some, but the possibility of there being even a shred of truth behind the legends is enough to keep the fear factor alive. That's why Aurora Cemetery is so creepy: nobody knows exactly what to expect from it.
11. Alton Bridge
Old Alton Bridge in Denton is scary enough to spook even the biggest skeptics. The story of the Goat Man is one of tragedy, hatred, and rage - and he's rumored to haunt this very place. Will you be his next victim?
12. Water Wonderland
Abandoned places in general are eerie, but especially those that look as if they could've been inhabited minutes before. That's precisely the case with Water Wonderland in West Texas, and the drone footage captured there is unbelievable.
13. Texas Chainsaw Massacre Hotel
How would you like to spend the night on the movie set of one of horror's most critically acclaimed movies? You can do just that here in Bastrop, Texas, because the set of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' has been converted into a motel! Have fun, but sleep with one eye open...and consider avoiding the food.
14. Bragg Road
One of my personal favorite haunted destinations in Texas, Bragg (or 'Ghost') Road in Saratoga truly houses an entity beyond this realm of existence. Each and every time I've visited, I've spotted a warm, yellow glow at the end of the road. The light gets no bigger as you approach it, and eventually fades away before you reach its source. Even if it isn't evil, it's definitely spooky.
The Regency Suspension Bridge is haunting in a different fashion - it may not have any ghost stories associated with it, but you'll definitely fear for your life until you get across. It's one of the last suspension bridges remaining in the United States, and for good reason - they aren't exactly the safest paths to traverse. You'll be sweating and crossing your fingers as the fragile wood panels swing and shake with every inch your car moves forward.
