No need to drop a pretty penny when you're looking for something to do here in Texas; we have a plethora of fun activities to enjoy with friends and family, and the best part is...they're totally FREE.
1) Watch the bats fly out from under the Congress Ave bridge in Austin (summertime only).
2) Try all the free samples at the Urban Harvest Farmer's Market held each Saturday from 8am - 12 pm in Houston.
3) Take a picnic lunch to the beach and beat the summer heat the Texas way!
Parking is unfortunately no longer free, but I sometimes park across the street from the seawall at Kroger or some other store. Hey, call me cheap, but it's a valid way around the parking fees. (It's just between you and me, though.)
4) Go hiking at the beautiful Big Thicket National Preserve in East Texas.
5) Go hiking or swimming at the Barton Creek Greenbelt in Austin (really neat hike that isn't too overcrowded.)
6) Pay a visit to the historic Alamo in downtown San Antonio.
7) Explore the Dallas Museum of Art, and while you're at it, stroll through the entire Dallas Arts District for the full experience of the nation's largest urban arts district.
8) If you're in the Amarillo area, check out the famous (or maybe infamous) Cadillac Ranch. It gets pretty muddy, so remember to wear closed-toe shoes!
9) Drive along the old Route 66 in the Panhandle. (Okay, the gas isn't free, but you don't technically have to spend a penny on any of the attractions). Pictured below is the Tower Station in Shamrock.
10) Swim, picnic, or just relax at one of the many lakes throughout the state.
11) Take the dogs, your fam, or your friends to Zilker Park in Austin, where you can walk or jog around Lady Bird Lake, or enjoy some free live music from time to time!
12) Witness Kemp Ridley's Sea Turtle Hatchling Release in Corpus Christi during scheduled turtle releases held from the months of April through August. (How could you resist the cuteness?!)
13) Visit the Stockyards Station in Fort Worth in the heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards for historic walking tours along the Texas Trail of Fame.
14) Map out a tour around Texas of these bizarre roadside attractions I wrote about: http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/texas/15-bizarre-roadside-attractions-in-tx/.
15) Take a stroll through the peaceful Japanese Gardens at Hermann Park in Houston.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but these totally free, family-friendly activities should fill up your weekends for a couple of months at least! What other awesome activities can us Texans do that won't cost a dime? Share your thoughts and experiences with us in the comments below!
