Nestled in the tiny town of Paint Rock, Texas (population: 356) is what some believe to be the largest Native American petroglyph site in the U.S.
Known simply as "The Painted Rocks," this 70-foot-high limestone cliff sits just north of the beautiful Concho River.
The site boasts 1,500 pictographs in a variety of colors, and the earliest among them dates to around 1,000 years ago.
You'll see everything from animal and human figures to intricate geometric shapes. While the meanings behind many of the drawings have yet to be discovered...
...a handful have obvious meanings, such as this Spring Equinox marker.
As for the exact indigenous group or groups responsible for these fascinating works of art, nobody knows for sure. Some mysteries are better left unsolved, however.
Also on the property is what the owners believe to be the remains of a Native American dwelling just steps away from the cliff. You can see it, along with the petroglyphs, on a one-hour Saturday guided tour!
