There are several haunted cemeteries in Texas where you just might see a ghost, including the historic Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville, TX. Known for being the final resting place of General Sam Houston (and a number of other influential figures in Texas history), this nearly 200-year-old site also has quite a few ghost stories associated with it. Despite its alleged hauntings, this ghost cemetery is undeniably beautiful, with massive trees providing shade for meandering paths that wind through the gravestones.
If you are even remotely interested in Texas history, Oakwood Cemetery in Huntsville is a must-visit destination.
The cemetery dates to 1846 - before Huntsville was officially incorporated as a city.
A number of important historical figures are buried here, including General Sam Houston himself.
You will also see the grave of Henderson King Yoakum, the author of the first comprehensive account of Texas' history...
...as well as seven Union soldiers who died during the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1867.
Many of those interred here, including six of the Union soldiers, perished as a result of the virus.
As you stroll through the shaded, beautifully landscaped grounds and ponder how those who rest here made Texas into the state we know and love, you just might feel a chill creep into the air.
Oakwood Cemetery is the site of many unexplained phenomena, particularly in the area surrounding the grave of five-year-old Rawley Rather Powell. Above his headstone, a life-size bronze statue of Jesus has quite a few ghost stories associated with it - visitors claim to have seen his hands move from a palm-up to palm-down position. His eyes supposedly follow you as you walk, as well.
Visit the City of Huntsville website for more information about this ghost cemetery, including hours when public visitation is allowed. You can also visit the Oakwood Cemetery's Facebook page.
