The Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival is a celebration of not only the friendship between the state and Japan but also the beautiful new opportunities spring provides. The Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual event that takes place sometime during April. As one of the preeminent free festivals in Nashville proper, it makes for one of the best ways to spend a Saturday, learning about the Japanese culture. It is a great place for those who are steeped in the love for the Japanese culture as well as casual observers who enjoy walking among the beautiful cherry blossom trees. No matter where you fit in that range you are sure to find something awesome at this incredible springtime tradition.
The cherry blossom trees are meant to symbolize the beautiful friendship between both the United States and Japan. The festival itself is presented by the Japan-America Society. We love the symbolism but also the beautiful hues of color it brings to our capital city.
The event itself takes place in the Nashville Public Square and will occur from 9:30 am to 5 pm. The 2.5-mile walk takes you by the riverfront and shows off the beautiful number of blooming trees in the city. The cherry blossom walk is one of the highlights of the event and is also free to the public. There is no need to register or sign up just show up during the event and join the crowds as they enjoy these beautiful trees all throughout our city.
Great for all ages, the festival invites local artisans to set up tents with spades of fun items and homemade merchandise. There will be food trucks in the square as well, offering Japanese-inspired fare throughout the day. The day is truly about immersing yourself in the Japanese culture in just about every way. Dogs are welcomed on a leash and encouraged to come dressed in a pink costume. Our beloved furry companions aren't the only ones that get to join in on the fun, there is also a cosplay contest for the best dressed. Pick your favorite anime or manga character and join in for the celebration.
Make sure to attend the cultural demonstrations if you have the time. You can learn about the ancient Japanese art of origami or even affably compete in the annual sumo match. There is a wide variety of cultural shows that feature some of the best that the Land of the Rising Sun has to offer. There will be singing, dancing, drumming, and so much more as you witness the sounds and sights from Japan.
